How to Style Your Family Photo Shoot

It’s that time of year.  Some of you already have this under your belt (well done, my friends!).  But if you’re like me…..now is about the time you’re thinking – I need to get some quick pictures taken of my family for holiday cards!  Stat!

That said – you don’t want to spend a lot of money – either on the clothes, or a photographer.  But, you want some great pictures to remember everyone as they are in that moment in time, in life.

So, my top tips for holiday photo season:

  1.  Coordinate, don’t match.  Look for pieces that complement each other, don’t go all 90’s on us and match (the days of the khaki pant and white shirt/dress thing are OVER).
  2. Shop your closet, first!  What is one of your favorite things to wear?  Start there…..and coordinate other people’s clothes in your household around that.  What you’re missing, you can surely find at great places like the Gap, Old Navy – even Marshall’s or TJ’s!
  3. Let the kids be kids.  If your daughter wants to wear something with sequins, let her.  Just say – ok you chose that, so Mommy is going to coordinate the rest of the outfit!  😉  Let your son wear a Star Wars sweater – see my son’s below.  You’ll love looking back at those pictures and remembering what their favorite things were.  And you’ll get better smiles!
  4. Go for non-posed, in the moment shots.  Again – the posed, all white with khaki look is so 90210 from the first go-around.
  5. Don’t want to shell out for a photographer? Have a friend use their iPhone 7!  Or ask a friend who owns a nicer camera  to take a few pics for you!  You can return the favor for her, or take her out to lunch as a thank you.  These photos below are mine from last year – I had a friend who is (more than) handy with her camera take them. I was THRILLED with how they turned out, they are some of my favorite pictures to date.
This is my family, last year.  Love this moment!

Those little people smiles are everything to me.

She’s got personality! Ha!

This was on the back of our holiday card. An absolute favorite.

{Stylish} Mom on the Go

We all have our Mom ‘go-to’ outfits.  Some of them are cuter than others…….(ha!), but don’t you love it when you go to the bus stop and all the other Moms are like ‘Hey!!!  That’s SO cute!  Where can i get that?’  OR – ‘Hey!  How do you always look so pulled together AND comfy??!!’

These Peach joggers and pullover are the answer to your prayers, ladies, trust me.  Mollie and I have been wearing ours ON REPEAT; we may or may not have bought ourselves a second pair of each.  Shhhhh!

The material is a lightweight french terry, the color is a heathered black……and the fit is spot-on.

Wait – it gets better –  everything Peach is 20% off SITEWIDE until next Monday!

Keep Jewels: the 2016 Charm Bracelet

Last Friday night, I had my neighborhood lady friends over for….what else….wine night!  We try to do this at someone’s house about once a month, and it’s always a good time to catch up with everyone!  This time though, I decided to spice it up a bit.  I invited my friend Natalie over to show off her Keep jewelry.

For those of you who don’t know Keep Collective – it’s a chic new company (created by Stella & Dot) that allows a client to create their own personalized piece of jewelry.  Here’s how it works:

  1. Choose your piece of jewelry.  You can create a bracelet, necklace, key fob, pet collar, earrings, or a bag!
  2. Choose your ‘keys.’  Your keys are like ‘charms’ from an old school charm bracelet.  Pieces to add that personalize your item.  Initials, stones, words, symbols, etc.
  3. Now here, you can either place your order, OR, ask your Keep stylist to mock up your design (they have a super cool tool that they can do this with, and you get to see exactly what your piece will look like with the keys on it!).
  4. Place your order, and gleefully wait for it to arrive in the mail!

Here are some of my favorite designs from their website – but the best part is….you can create your own!  Click HERE to get started, and of course email me or comment below if you have ANY questions or if you’d like to contact Natalie! Keep is a GREAT way to have your own business and work from home while being a Mommy.  🙂

Mother + Daughter Jewelry?

It’s hard to do this right. Mother/daughter jewelry that both mother and daughter actually want to wear.  Usually, it’s one way or the other – too juvenile for Mom, or too expensive for daughter to wear everyday.

Gorjana, who is known for her simplistic everyday styles but with a polished and chic esthetic, has made this tough combination work.  We were SO excited to try out Mini + Me, given that we both have daughters who love jewelry just like us!

You’ve probably already seen Erin’s post with her daughters on the Mini + Me collection, and today is my turn.  My little G and I had so much fun shooting this jewelry and having matching necklaces and bracelets.  Her little face lit up when I told her we’d be doing some pictures – just the two of us.

Clearly, this last one is my favorite.  Nothing better than a silly 5 year old!

This is the best gift – to yourself, to your daughter, a pair of sisters, or for your Mom!  There’s a turquoise option too – shop the entire Mini + Me collection right here:

And, G & me are both wearing J.Crew (of course).  Here are our dresses:

Gorjana Mini + Me Just in Time for Mother’s Day

We wanted to wish all of you Mom’s out there a VERY Happy Mother’s Day!

My girls were SO excited to get these new items from Gorjana Mini + Me Collection –

They love that they get to match their mommy (which makes my heart smile!).

(Ella) Top, Shorts (Costco, really!), Shoes ~ (Erin) Skirt, Shoes  ~ (Violet) Top, Shorts (Costco), Shoes

The could not put them on fast enough and have worn them every day since.

Motherhood is hard, let’s be honest. Everyone has told me since my girls were babies that the days are long and the years are short – they are right.

It is hard to really see that picture when you are covered in food, exhausted and trying to get through just one day at a time.

But I look at my girls – at the mere ages of 6 and 8 and have never felt such a love for a human being.   I, like all of you, plead for the clock to slow down but know that I must try and relish every long day.

As we have worn these bracelets the past few days – I found myself smiling see how we were connected with a sparkle or splash of pink!

Talk about the ultimate gift for all those ‘mini me’s’ in your life!!!

And please, don’t let my babies grow up…

Outfit of the Day, Kids Edition!

One of my favorite things to see on other blogs or Instagram these days is everyone’s #ootd (outfit of the day).  My daughter, thankfully for me, has turned out to be QUITE the girly girl.  All about fashion – and at this age, pretty agreeable if she likes something I don’t approve of (Think masses of glitter, tulle, sequins all on one garment).  I’m sure that will change, but for now, i’m reveling in my ability to gently change her mind (i should be knocking on wood right now).

That said, i do want her to have her own opinion, and make her own choices when it comes to getting dressed.  So while I tend to curate her closet (i mean, i am a stylist for a living, lol!), she typically is the one in charge when it comes to what she’s wearing to school.  Last week, she LOVED that it was cool enough out to wear the new dress below that we got over the summer.  We paired it with a white bow of course, and some leopard print leggings.  Her shoes are light up Puma’s – I highly recommend.  It’s by Hootkid, and we picked it up at The Little House in Kansas City while home visiting family.  The Little House always has some of our favorite things for back to school, and this year was no exception!

Dress by Hootkid. Probably her absolute favorite dress in her closet right now.

We had so much fun styling her new dress and taking a picture last Monday, we decided that we would take a pic every day of her outfit creations.  So, today’s post is all about my daughter’s ‘Outfit of the Day, Kids Edition.’  Enjoy!

Beach Bound!

In just a few days I am heading to Rosemary Beach, FL with my family and we are beyond excited!

beach-bound-1343618769

With a beach house waiting for our arrival, I am packing up the family and getting ready to lounge for a week (is that possible as a Mom?)

We have a LONG drive ahead of us and having two little ones, I am overly-preparing for a busy car ride.

Any home run ideas you want to share with me? So far I have movies (I made a no TV rule starting tomorrow so they can load up on movies in the car!), coloring books, Grade Level workbooks, stamps and sticker books.

Don’t forget, it’s Father’s Day this weekend – so I threw in a cool shirt for my sweet hubby for a little surprise!

As for some of my new favorite items (most on sale!)  I have picked up for the family, here is a sneak peek:

Spring Break Style

We recently went on Spring Break – and after this loooooong winter here in Connecticut, we NEEDED it!  I was super excited to break out some of my old and new favorites for our dinners out after long days at Disney and the pool.  If you follow me on Instagram (molliestylespies) then you’ve probably seen these pictures, but I wanted to include some shop-able spring break style links for those of you who might be interested. Oh- and some cute pics of my kiddos too.

Night out at the California Grill in the Contemporary Hotel (soooo good!) Also, my husband is horrified that I posted this pic of him, oops!

Look at these cuties. My daughter is wearing her favorite dress of the moment by Joah Love (found at Peek a Boutique in Northbrook, IL) , and my son has a KC shirt on from Charlie Hustle (find it at Little House in Kansas City).
Had to show a blurry (yet cute) pic of my whole family. My Mom, Dad, and sister joined us at Disney for this great trip!

After our trip to Disney, we headed to Miami’s Bal Harbour for a couple of days to chill out. This picture is taken in the gorgeous St Regis hotel lobby. We’re DEFINITELY going back!

Laugh with me about my kids’ faces – they were DONE with pictures by this point in the trip. But, let’s talk about my favorite new pair of shoes. My Stuart Weitzman gladiators.
Of course, my new favorite Kooba bag (the Mini Jonnie in Earth Python to be specific) came with me again.
