How to wear 1 {fabulous} skirt – 3 ways.

Often when I am working with a client I find this problem:  ’I love love love this piece, but I only wear it with this or that.  How else can I wear it?’

Normally the items my clients are pairing with their one fabulous piece are the items that the salesperson at the store suggested or even better, the outfit was the what the mannequin was wearing.  Pretty foolproof, I must admit.  But the idea is to get more wear out of your clothes, no?

So – I recently bought a gorgeous maxi skirt at Anthropologie that ironically I had recommended on Pinterest for another client (#shoppingaddiction #yesIhaveone).  Here it is:

Ping Embroidered Maxi Skirt, $168

Ping Embroidered Maxi Skirt, $168

This skirt is just so versatile, yet with the embroidery and bright blue color, it can be a bit tricky to pair other things with it (other than an obvious orange tank like the model is wearing, or a white tank).  So…..I decided to do a little show and tell with items found in my own closet.

Of course I do not have a professional photographer on hand, nor do I trust my 5 year old to hold my fancy camera and take pictures.  So – please mind the selfies taken into my mirror!  ;-)

Look #1

Look 1: Denim shirt from J Crew + Men’s hat from Saks off Fifth + Target Mossimo wedges

I threw on my chambray shirt from J Crew (similar HERE), added one of my favorite spring/summer fedora hats that I found at Saks off Fifth last summer in the Men’s department (similar HERE), and some oldie but goodie wedges from Target (similar HERE).

Just another shot so you can see the view from the front and the hat a little better.

Look #2

Skirt paired with silky Vince tank top, J Crew cargo vest, and Stella and Dot necklace. Same shoes as prior.

Skirt paired with silky Vince tank top, J Crew cargo vest, and Stella and Dot necklace. Same shoes as prior.

This is a go-to look for me.  I have worn both this tank and vest A TON; the money spent on each has been well worth it!  Find the Vince tank HERE, and a similar vest HERE.

I also love this Stella and Dot Rebel Pendant necklace – it goes with everything and anchors a flowy top well.

Look # 3

Last look - J Crew linen cable knit sweater and knock-off J Crew necklace. Worn with flat sparkly sandals.

Last look – J Crew linen cable knit sweater and knock-off J Crew necklace. Worn with flat sparkly sandals.

For the last look I went a little more casual.  The J Crew boatneck sweater is a linen blend, which makes it perfect for spring time weather, and I threw on my turquoise bubble necklace that is a total knock off of the original J Crew necklace that was EVERYWHERE last spring.  Brighthouse Baubles is THE place to get affordable jewelry that looks like the real thing.  Check them out!

J Crew no longer has that sweater, but for a similar look – check out these lightweight cardigans at the Gap.  I like the kelly green with the blue skirt.

The shoes are just a sparkly flat that I have had FOREVER.  Any kind of metallic sandal dresses up this outfit just enough.

That wraps up today’s lesson in fashion – hope you’ve enjoyed the peek into my closet  and now you know what I’ll be wearing my new skirt with this season!

Cleaning out a Man’s closet

Men’s closets.  Typically a mess, not organized in the least, and in need of cleaning out and reorganization on a semi-regular basis.  Now I know some of you know men out there who are super neat and particular about where things go.  They are a-typical, let me tell you!

At Style Spies, we also clean out and organize men’s closets.  It’s actually a lot of fun because most men are of the ‘whatever you say’ attitude!  So if you’re like me (a teensy bit bossy) you will be in your own personal kind of heaven.  Today, I wanted to share with you my husbands closet.  I bust in there about every six months with or without his permission and clean/purge/organize for him.  I know you’re probably saying – he can do that himself!  Trust me, he cannot.  When left to his own devices, he is never sure what is spring and what is fall, nor is he sure what is navy or black!

Oh but I love him so!  Isn’t he handsome?

IMG_1006

Alright so here are some ‘before’ shots.

I realize that there are many closets that are much worse off than his, but……..he does live with me.  A messy closet is not in my vocabulary.

IMG_1210

A little disheveled, dry cleaning bags that are never taken off, mixed up seasons, and some choice folding techniques.

IMG_1211

IMG_1212

The shoes aren’t that bad – but the after pictures show how you can make more room for your shoes.

Now, for the ‘After.

IMG_1213Colorized and sorted.

IMG_1214

Pants hung together, and all short sleeve and summer shirts together.  Don’t want to accidentally break out the linen pink and white shirts too early!  ;-)

IMG_1215

Heavy winter sweaters on the top shelf, spring sweaters and cardigans below, denim and denim-related pants folded up together.  I also like to teach my clients the art of folding denim.  Many years in retail taught me that the easiest way to decipher which jeans are which is to fold them with the rear pocket facing up.

IMG_1216

My husband doesn’t wear a full-on suit to work everyday, so he only has a couple.  We keep them in a hanging bag to help with the dust settling on the shoulders.  His ties and belts hang on organizers next to the hanging bag (you can’t quite see them), and behind that are all of his blazers, sport coats and casual jackets.  And yep – a few of my dresses made their way into his closet.  ;-)))

IMG_1218

Organized shoes.  Nothing better.  More space was made by purging a few, and then flipping each shoe so you can see the back and front of each pair.

IMG_1217

After cleaning out his shoes, there were some extra shelves at the top that were empty.  Seeing as how the pajama pants were living with all of his jeans before, I thought this would be a good place for pj pants and work out/chill out related attire.

And that’s it!  Voila!  A concise, easy to work with closet.  Being able to see things clearly makes it SO much easier to get dressed in the morning.

Please let any of us at Style Spies know if you know a man who needs some help with his closet – or some shopping help!!  In many cases, our clients have asked us to help their husbands or significant others, because the guys just might be a little more receptive to someone other than their wife or girlfriend telling them to get rid of those A&F multi pocketed pants circa 1999.

On Target

I cannot stop shopping for spring at Target right now!  They have really nailed the trends and the basics this season, at a price point everyone can afford.  We have a trip scheduled to Scottsdale at the end of April and I have been looking in my closet lately to see what pieces I’m missing for the upcoming warmer season.  One would think that maybe I could wear a few of these pieces now since it’s March 18 – but one look outside at our ‘wintry mix’ and that’s a solid NO.  Argh Chicago weather!!

Some things I may or may not have already taken home?

This pleather jacket is SO CUTE on.  It comes in 4 different colors, but this blue is gorgeous.  And it doesn’t look like pleather.  Trust me!  The ruching on the side is such a great detail.

OpenZoomLayer

Target Xhilaration Faux Leather Jacket, $39.99

The contrast pocket on this hi-low tank got me.  Super cute under a jean jacket, comes in three other colors, $12.99.  Donesies!

Mossimo Supply Co Hi-Lo Tank, $12.99

Mossimo Supply Co Hi-Lo Tank, $12.99

I’m always looking for cute but not juvenile (this is a key point here people) graphic tees.  These Mossimo ones are perfect.  They’re not too tight, not too long – great with shorts, jeans, flip flops or flats.

OpenZoomLayer-4

Mossimo Supply Co Graphic Tee, $14.99

I knew i needed this shirt the minute I touched it.  It’s a nice rayon/spandex mix, and is very similar to a style by James Perse that usually goes for $125!!!  I tried it on – drapes beautifully.  Are you saying – that’s so BASIC!  Exactly.  Every woman needs a great white casual blouse – think of the jewelry options you can put with this ‘basic’ blouse.  Statement necklaces galore!

OpenZoomLayer-2

Converse One Star Long Sleeve button down top, $22.99

Finally, a Stuart Weitzman knockoff done right.  Obsessing over these at SW for a couple of seasons, now I can get them for $24.99!  Wear with everything.  Literally.

OpenZoomLayer-3

Mossimo Pam Wedge, $24.99

One of my favorite ways to punch up a handbag that’s been around the block a few times is to tie a cute scarf onto one of the handles.  This fits the bill.  Colorful but not too much; the fringe adds to the hip factor.

OpenZoomLayer-6

Global Girlfriend Black Wildflower Scarf, $24.99

Giftbar + Style Spies

About a month ago, Style Spies (Chicago) partnered up with Giftbar.  What is Giftbar, you ask?  I will tell you!  Giftbar is the brainchild of a couple of Chicago gals who realized how difficult it can be to buy a gift certificate from local boutiques and small businesses.

how-it-works

Giftbar aggregates all of the best of the best stores, restaurants, and services in your city (right now Chicago and New York are on Giftbar, LA coming soon) and allows you to buy a gift certificate online.  A lot of these smaller businesses may not have that online ability – you’d have to buy it over the phone or physically walk into the store.

Here’s what they have to say about themselves:

Giftbar is a digital gift card marketplace that offers insanely curated gift cards for the best, local merchants in your neighborhood. Our selection of shops are carefully chosen – so you don’t waste your time trying to find the perfect gift! We find simply the best shops and restaurants for convenient and thoughtful gifting.

Not sure what to buy for that special someone? No problem. The shops here will make anyone swoon. Sort them by neighborhood, price or your rich aunt’s personality type. Still not sure? Check out our GiftbarTender and let us help you out. Or just send our popular, Giftbar of Choice, and let them do the choosing. To make things even better, we let you customize your gift card with beautiful, digital wrappings and photos, so your gift card isn’t just a piece of boring plastic. Did we also mention that Giftbar gift cards are crazy smart. We can send them 24/7 via email, mobile or mail and we provide reminders making it easy for anyone to use, even if, ahem, your man is always forgetting gift cards at home. Now grab yourself a cocktail and get to gifting. That filthy dirty martini won’t drink itself.

Giftbar is such a great service, you must check them out (and Style Spies’ page) for yourself.  How else can you learn about Giftbar?

Like them on Facebook.

Follow them on Twitter.

Tell your friends you want a Style Spies gift certificate, and send them to https://chicago.giftbar.com/.

A spring in HIS step!

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of working with a male client – cleaning out his closet and then working with him online to suggest items that would fit well into his current lifestyle and closet.  It was SO much fun.

This particular guy has great style to start with; it just needed a little tweaking.  Some of my favorite items in his closet were his Bonobos colored khakis.  I mean…..I can only WISH my husband would wear these!

lime-slim-pants-for-men-key-limes

Bonobos Slim Straight in Key Limes, $68

sunrise-orange-pants-for-men-sun-belts-straight-leg

Bonobos Straight Leg in Sun Belts

fuchsia-straight-leg-pants-for-men-pink-tarnations

Bonobos Slim Straight Khaki in Pink Tarnation, $68

The problem with the colored khakis always ends up being this:  what to wear with them?  The idea is to tone them down but still show them off……here are a couple suggestions we liked:

shr_fall_river-_reshoot__tall_1

Bonobos chambray shirt in Fall River, $88

J Crew Slim Pindot Shirt, $88

J Crew Slim Flagstone Henley in Colorblock, $65

We also decided that his shoe collection could use an update.  These driving loafers are SO similar to some much pricier brands, and they are perfect for that casual but not too casual work enviornment.

J Crew Thompson Driving Penny Loafer, $148

That said, for that REALLY casual work enviornment that a lot of men do work in, ya gotta show off your style somehow…..

Some other great basics we pinned?

Boden ‘Poacher’ jacket. On sale for $168. I wonder how much this model goes for?  ;-)

J Crew Broken-in V-neck tee, $24.50. These come in ALL colors, but having at least two white, two grey, and two black is a great way to start.

J Crew 484 Selvedge Jean in Resin, $155

Finally – one thing men always need (aren’t guys always wearing socks with holes in them?) are socks.  Socks don’t have to be just black, brown, navy or grey anymore.  Spice up your wardrobe with some fun ones!  One of my favorite sock lines for men is Richer-Poorer.

Richer-Poorer is out of LA, the socks are $12, and they come in every print and pattern under the sun!

Couple of favorites….

Richer Poorer Socks, Grad Orange, $12

That about wraps up some favorites I recommended for my client – but if you’d like to see more basics and things I think he could benefit from adding into his wardrobe, check out my Pinterest board for him!

How to Wear Skinny Jeans

I look very forward to our Florida ”winter months” because I get to wear denim and sweaters! The rest of the year it really is impossible to wear anything other than dresses and skirts. It is way too hot. Especially since I spend most of my day outside with my one and two year old at the park. And they are awake and ready to play during the HOTTEST hours! Okay – back on track! So just before our first cold front arrived last December, I did some prep – ordered some great new skinny jeans that would keep my legs warm and stylish! There are just so many these days to pick from, it was actually hard to decide on which to buy! Do I get animal print or zebra print? How many pastel colored skinnies do I really need??? (Think light yellow, mint green, pink, mauve…) and can’t forget leather! Can I rock a metallic pair at the park??? Well these are the ones I finally decided I need to have. Please note that most of these jeans have been rolled around in parks and sandboxes many times already and have endured many washes. So although they don’t look as great hanging on the hanger anymore, the colors are still very much new and overall still look great on! All mommies need this at the end of the day right? Easy wash and wear clothes that we can get down and dirty in. I didn’t realize how many skinnies I actually had until I layed them out for this blog! Note to my husband: Dont read this blog! Or if you do, I bought all these before I even knew you! The good thing is that each outfit you will see below cost me $25 – $40! For both pieces! Now that’s a bargain!

Grey Skinny Jeans

Grey Skinny Jeans

I love pairing my grey skinny jeans with pastel colored tops.  My fave pastel color right now is this light pink. Note the white lace detail around the shoulders. I usually look for tops that have some sort of nice detail on them so I can skip out on accessories since they aren’t that functional anyways for the park! I never skip out on an earring stud though! I have a few that I wear everyday that I feel pulls the outfit together. With this outfit I would wear my pearl studs and my nude flats.

Light Distressed Denim Jeans

Light Distressed Denim Jeans

My light denim shredded skinnies! Or as my mother in law likes to call them – my jeans I got half off since half are missing! I love these so much! I like to keep this look simple since the jeans make such a strong statement. I wear with a white tee, white belt, white keds and a silver studs.

Floral Skinny Jeans

Floral Skinny Jeans

These are my most recent addition. I have been on a hunt to find the perfect pair of floral skinny jeans for a while now. I didn’t want anything too dark colored or too literal. This print is very subdued and the colors are very soft. It is almost like a brocade print more than a floral which I love even more. Obsessed with brocade! The mint top has some funky studded details on the left shoulder. I like to wear this with my gold studs and gold flats. These skinnies also look great with the pink laced top as pictured above.

White Skinny Jeans

White Skinny Jeans

My white skinny jeans. I used to love wearing these with a orangey yellow floral top, but these days I like to rock them with this nude sequined top. I was concerned the sequins would not work when I am holding my toddlers in my arms, but there is no snagging fortunately. And easy to wash. I like to wear this outfit with my diamond studs (cubics really)  and nude flats.

Olive Green Skinny Jeans

Olive Green Skinny Jeans

These olive-green skinnies look dwarfed in this picture! I love them on though. I love the leather detail along the waistline and pockets. I like to wear these with a brown/black animal print top, gold studs and gold flats. Or with just the white tee as pictured above paired with animal print flats. I love the combo of animal print and cargo green.

Red Skinny Jeans

Red Skinny Jeans

These are my red skinny jeans. They are actually corduroy so I shouldnt really call them “jeans”. I like to wear these with my black and white striped nautical top, black flats and diamond studs.

Cobalt Blue Skinny Jeans

Cobalt Blue Skinny Jeans

I really wanted to participate in the cobalt blue trend but was unsure which piece I should invest in. Blue shoes, pants or top. I ended up going with pants since I would get more wear out of them and make more outfits. I like to wear these with my black and white safari top, white belt, black flats and my silver studded earrings. These pants also look very cool with the black and white striped top and red flats. Very nautical!

Classic Denim Skinnies

Classic Denim Skinnies

These are my classic dark blue denim skinny jeans. I like to wear these with a boho fringe top, brown moccasin flats and gold studded earrings. These jeans also look great with the brown and black animal print top as pictured with the olive-green skinnies, gold flats and gold studs.

Animal Print Skinny Jeans

Animal Print Skinny Jeans

I adore these!!! As you can see I do love my animal prints! I like to keep this look simple, just a black loose fitting top (note the mesh details on the bottom which is actually the back side) for some extra interest. I like to wear this with my silver studs and black flats. This also looks great with a plain white tee, gold flats and gold studs.

Pink Skinny Jeans

Pink Skinny Jeans

Light on light! Light pink skinny jeans with an off white tunic. This is so nice to wear actually. Love wearing this with my nude flats and diamond studs. I feel very pretty and soft in this outfit.

Black Skinny Jeans

Black Skinny Jeans

And finally we are on the last outfit!! My super skinny black skinnies paired with a semi sheer polka dot top. This blouse is so pretty! The sleeves are a bit puffed and the length is perfect. I love to wear this outfit with my pearl studs and my red flats. Of course the black pants will go with so many other tops. The white tee and animal print flats, either animal print top as pictured above, the nautical top with red flats.. just to name a few!!! The posibilities of looking like a pulled together mommy are endless and does not have to break the bank!

Stay tuned for a spring dress story!!

Closet Makeover!!!

Happy Friday!  We are excited to introduce you all to Anna, our Miami Style Spy, via her first blog post with us.  Read on to find out how she stays stylish on a budget – and how she helps her clients too!

***************

I have been fortunate enough to have an eye for fashion, but not as fortunate to spend as much as I wanted on clothes so I had to find a way to recycle my unwanted once fabulous items for new on trend soon to be loved ones… and I did! Post two babies I decided to sell all my maternity clothes (those were my first to go!) and then all my pre mommy outfits that unfortunately were either inappropriate or dated. With all my earnings, I bought my self some super cute outfits without breaking the bank! I am now helping fellow mommies to do the same! But all women (and men for that matter!) can enjoy this service. I just need you to need me to do this for you! My first mommy makeover is my gorgeous greek friend Eleanna Taligaris. She has just had her first baby, a beautiful baby girl who is now 6 months old and it was time to rid of all the maternity clothes and old outfits and get some to dress her new body and lifestyle. This is Eleanna in my favorite outfit we purchased for her.

Eleanna in my favorite easy go to mommy outfit.

Eleanna in my favorite easy go to mommy outfit.

This is perfect for your everyday life, whether its running errands or playing with her baby at the park, Eleanna looks effortless and stylish. Outfit composed of a black jersey tank top, animal print high low skirt, and coral ballet flats. Throw a denim jacket on top and a pair of gold cuffs for some warmth and extra style. And for the nights that the babysitter comes over to watch your precious one, upgrade those coral flats into something fabulous like these coral suede ankle strap pants and a fun bib necklace and voila! Instant glam!

Obsessed with these Gold Cuffs! Wear one on each arm!

These are some more outfits that we purchased for Eleanna that are just as easy and fun to wear.

IMG_7075

Here they each are close up:

http://stylespies.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/IMG_7072.jpg

First outfit pictured is a semi sheer chiffon animal print blouse paired with mauve skinnies and a braided brown belt. I also really love the animal print blouse tucked in the red peplum skirt featured in the second outfit. Another look I love is the white blouse featured in third outfit over the mauve skinnies. Something about the lightness of this outfit speaks ethereal.

IMG_7071

Second outfit is the above mentioned red peplum skirt paired with a navy/white polka dot cap sleeve top. Both items are made of this super comfortable and stretchy fabric so it feels as comfortable as wearing a pair of jeans and a tee but looks way more fashionable! Anything nautical and anything peplum is so in right now! The combination of the two trends totally work in this outfit since the colors (navy, white and red) and patterns (polka dot) are so classic.

IMG_7067

Last outfit is also the above mentioned white blouse with black collar and pear details (also so in right now!) with a pair of mint trousers that have studded details along pockets. The embellished neckline can be achieved by simply adding a collar necklace like the ones below to your favorite white (or any other color) button down blouse.

31662480-0337790211-0221839590-03

The next outfit is one we just picked up as we quickly breezed by Forever 21 with babies in tow. This romantic yellow lace dress really spoke to Eleanna. It is actually really comfortable on since its lined with cotton and I am dying for her to wear this on our next playdate with this gorgeous necklace for a little punch of color and a little more flare. Finish off with a pair of nude flats and will be the envy of the playground!

40480041-04 25504131-02

And theeeeeeeese are some of her old outfits that we cleaned out of her closet that were no longer desired, or needed (maternity clothes), or were just outdated. We turned  dowdy into stylish!!!!!!

IMG_6435 IMG_6476 IMG_6415IMG_6414IMG_6977

This is just the beginning of my journey revamping Eleanna’s closet. There are still a lot of oldies we need to sell and plenty of goodies we need to buy! Stay tuned!

Open Closet: Kyle (our Insta friend)

de728b2664f011e2ad1922000a1cbd31_7 A well edited kids closet.

We met today’s Open Closet owner through Instagram.  Really.  How fun (and funny) is that?  A couple of weeks ago, someone I began following posted a gloriously organized children’s closet – perfect hangers, perfect spacing, perfect baskets….you get the picture above.  One comment by me, one comment by our KC Style Spy Melanie, and it was decided.  We wanted to feature her closet & organization methods.

Kyle Family Photo

This is Kyle.  {on Instagram she’s ‘kylerattigan‘}

She is a Mother of two scrumptious little ones, a wife, and a lover of all things organized.  When she’s not dispensing fashion advice to friends and family, she’s working out at Local Barre, antiquing with her husband (she got a good one, apparently!), cooking (via Pinterest lately) and skiing!

She’s also working on opening her own Etsy shop in the near future, Bloomfield Bling.  Inspired by the Etsy shop Candy Shop Vintage, whose owner is a gal from Charleston with some amazing taste in vintage baubles,  Kyle can’t wait to get into the biz herself!  We’ll for sure let you know when her shop opens (and what our favorite pieces are!).

Anyway, after some back and forth via email, Kyle happily agreed to take some pictures of the closet organization around her house for us.  We can’t wait to show you!  First though….a little Q&A so you can get to know her a little better.

 Q & A with Kyle

SS:  Tell us a little bit about yourself – where did you grow up, go to college, career path.

I am an east coast girl.  I grew up in New Canaan, CT about an hour outside of NYC.  I was born in Manhattan and my parents moved out of the city right before I arrived.  My paternal grandmother lived in NYC so we were there often during my childhood.  She definitely had a major influence on my style.  When I visited she would take me with her to all the fun department stores!  I studied Elementary Education at the University of Delaware.  Shortly after graduation I moved into NYC and found my first apartment that I rented with a good college friend.  I began teaching Kindergarten at an all boys private school.  After teaching both K and first grade, I transitioned from the classroom to administration, and landed my dream job in another independent school as assistant director of admissions.  Even though I was in a uniform school setting, fashion played a role.  I met many parents (some with backgrounds at Vogue and Domino magazines).  For all you Bravo fans, we even had two Real Housewives (LuAnn and Jill) whose children attended our school.  Working with students and their families was my first love, but I have always had a strong interest in fashion.  Living in NYC furthered that passion and some of my style choices.

SS:  What were your earliest style and fashion influences?

My two earliest fashion influences were certainly my dad and his mother.  They both had such effortless style.  My grandmother loved dressing up! When I stayed over a weekend, we would always go to church on Sunday.  She would put on her finest attire, and loved dressing me up as well.  I also remember a very detailed beauty routine of hers where she would carefully pin her hair in tiny curls secured with a bobby pin every night before bed, and wake up with perfect hair each morning.  She always let me play pretend with her heels and bags.  My dad was born with an eye for fashion, and paid careful attention to details.  He loved shopping for my mom and bought this Pucci dress at Saks in the 1960’s, which my mom graciously past down to me.

Kyle Pucci Dress

I wore this dress on a night out in the Hamptons circa 2002.  It is much too short for a mom of two at this point, but I will definitely hand it down to my daughter!

SS: Do you have any style icons or styles you find yourself emulating?

I guess my top style icons would be Jessica Alba, Katie Holmes and the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.  Even though Jessica and Katie are busy moms, they still manage to have fun with fashion, and always look cool and youthful.  CBK was the ultimate sophisticated lady.  Her style was quite refined.  I admire her timeless and elegant clothing choices.  She always seemed to let her natural beauty shine through.

SS: Favorite places to shop?

My favorite places to shop (in no particular order) Estate Sales/Tag Sales (costume jewelry), J.Crew, Target and Togs (New Canaan and Greenwich, CT).  If anyone is in the CT area Togs has the most incredible sales.  I don’t online shop as much, but it is fun to browse Shopbop and look at all the amazing eye candy!

SS: Top 3 designers you love for yourself?

DVF (for bold /colorful pieces), Rebecca Taylor (I am a sucker for all her blouses -they are ultra feminine and always look good with dark skinny jeans) Ralph Lauren (his designs stand the test of time).

SS:  We have to ask you this:  How are you helping to cultivate your daughters’ or sons’ style?  Or are you at all?  ;-)

I would say James has a preppy style.  For me, it’s easiest to keep boy clothes simple.  He wears a lot of stripes, khaki pants and cable knit sweaters.  Hadley will be 4 in May and definitely has her own ideas about what she likes to wear.  She is really good at getting herself dressed each morning, and i’m trying to be more laid back in letting her make her very own choices.  Sometimes I have to intervene though – ha!  Hadley likes to mix prints and occasionally, she nails it!  Most of her clothes are from Target, H&M and Old Navy.  If we’re going to splurge we like Mini Boden and Crewcuts.  Hadley has also sported some of my old clothing; my Mom carefully preserved a handful of her favorite pieces from my childhood.  Seeing my daughter in these has been really fun.
Kyle Kids

SS: Organization wise, which is your favorite closet/room/space in your house?

I would have to say my children’s closets (see first photo in post).  I love looking at all their little clothing, because I know they won’t be this small forever!

SS: How does your husband influence the organization process around your house?  Or does he?

I am most fortunate to have married a guy who likes to clean, and who at times, is even neater than I am!  I knew Jay was a keeper when I saw his first apartment.  His room was definitely super organized, while his roommates lived in disaster areas.  : )  Jay color codes his ties and every article of clothing is folded perfectly within his closet.    It is kind of crazy!  He is also an expert at folding laundry and doesn’t seem to mind this task, which is another bonus.  *SS note – Seriously!  Can he give our husbands a seminar? It might be his fall-back career he doesn’t yet know about….

SS: Biggest Splurge?

A Dolce and Gabbana Dress, circa 2003.  It has made MANY appearances at weddings over the years!

SS: Biggest Steal?

An Elsa Peretti bean cuff that my father scored at an estate sale in California. Can you believe the lady was selling it for $100?! Her ex-husband had given it to her, and she just wanted to part with it.

SS:  Got some tips for keeping a busy household organized?  Any websites or stores you look to for organizational inspiration?

Most of the time I am flying by the seat of my pants, but I do try to stay organized so things have a better chance of falling into place.  We are so lucky to have wonderful closet space, which is rare in our town.  A lot of the homes are older, so some of them never came with proper closets.  When we renovated our place, we had someone come in to design a front hall closet, the children’s closets, kitchen pantry and our laundry area.  The previous owners had California Closets come to do the master bedroom, so we were set there.  One trick I have picked up along the way is that everything looks better stored in a pretty bin.  I have had luck finding baskets and bins at Homegoods and Kohls.  My favorite storage unit is the Expedit from Ikea.  We have two of these in our play area to corral all the toys.  I have discovered some good options for keeping accessories like belts and scarves tidy, at the Container Store.  The Dollar Store is another gem for household organization items.  You never know what you may find there!

SS:  Just for fun: Where is your favorite place to vacation and why?

Favorite vacation spot is Stone Harbor, NJ.  Nothing beats the Jersey shore in the summer!  It is low-key and there are so many cute shops and yummy restaurants.

SS:  Favorite local restaurant (in Hoboken, NJ)?

My favorite local restaurant is the Fig Tree.  Their signature fig cocktail with fig vodka, honey, fig puree and Prosecco is amazing.  Everything on the menu is local and seasonally prepared.  Totally delicious!

SS:  Thank you Kyle for all of your answers, we have loved getting to know you!  Readers – scroll down for the goods on Kyle’s closets!

040 A concise collection of flats and low heels.  Note:  no basics found here, but that’s what we LOVE!  Who needs basic black flats?  Spring is all about spicing it up with color and attitude.

Kyle HandbagsHandbags…what a gorgeous collection (Louis, Gucci, Chanel…..oh my!).  Keeping them within view is so helpful so you can change with the seasons, or just with your attitude!

Kyle Closet w KidsHere’s a (totally cute) wide angle view of Kyle’s closet.  Goes to show you that though it’s not the largest space, if you use it wisely you can get a lot in there and still be able to ‘shop your closet’ daily.  Seriously Kyle, that baby is scrumptious!

Kyle Closet Full

Upon closer view, notice jewelry displayed on one shelf, belts on another, jackets hung together and dresses and pants (colorized). Some shoes are stowed in clear boxes below to fend off dust.

Kyle Necklaces.Sweaters

A self professed ‘east coast girl,’ Kyle keeps it real with a few cable knit sweaters neatly folded.  For her necklaces, she uses what used to be a tie hanger/rack.  Genius!

Kyle 2nd Closet viewHere’s the 2nd half of Kyle’s closet – blouses, longer dresses, necklaces and sweaters.  Denim on the top shelf.  It’s so refreshing to see a closet full of color and life.

Kyle ScarvesLadies (and gents), if you don’t have a scarf organizer like this, you should.  It’s the best way to display what you’ve got (just like jewelry, keep it out!) so you can mix and match with other patterns and solids in your wardrobe.  Another thing we love is that she’s got this hanger on the flat side of her closet door (on a hook) instead of tucked in amongst the dresses – almost a guarantee that these are well loved and worn!

Kyle LV SuitcaseWe want one!  Had to show you this gorgeous vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase from Saks Fifth Ave – generously given to Kyle by a former co-worker and friend of hers (a native New Yorker, of course).  Um, wow!  What a gift!

Kyle Jewelry 4This has got to be one of our favorite things: a jewelry armoire!  Hallelujah, hallelujah….and so on.  A great way to keep everything in one place, also a pretty piece of furniture to display special pictures.

Kyle Jewelry CollageHad to make a sweet collage of the beautiful baubles inside the jewelry armoire.  She DOES have some great vintage pieces-  look at some of those earrings!

Kyle Coat ClosetWho doesn’t love this coat closet?  Kids coats together, adults together, boots have a home.  Also, each plaid basket is for one person – hats, mittens, gloves, whatever!  So you always know where your stuff is.  And your kids’ stuff.

And that about wraps it up, Style Spies fans.  Please message us if you have any questions about today’s closet, we know Kyle would love to volunteer advice whether it be about who to use to build out your space, or what shop to try first for baskets.

We had to include this cute picture of her and her hubby at a wedding this past summer.  She divulged that this dress is a Tibi number, but it’s from Rent the Runway!  Love the idea of saving some money on a trend (colorblock).

Open Closet: Alana (a Chicago fashionista)

IMG_1125

Chicago Fashionista,  Alana W

Today’s open closet is a bit of a departure.  We wanted to feature one of our client’s closets.  No, she doesn’t write a blog (yet), she doesn’t have kids (yet), nor any pets (yet).  BUT, let me tell you, this girl has a FABULOUS closet.  I can’t speak highly enough of Alana’s taste.  While she may need a little help in the purging and organizing department (but not much, and don’t we all?), she does NOT need help shopping.  She’s also a fantastic deal-finder, especially with designer items.  Designer items when on sale can be tricky – sometimes they’re real losers, but other times if you have a true eye for style and classics, getting in on a good designer is the best.  And that’s what Alana is great at.

You may remember Alana from a Client Confidential we did on her a few months back.  She loves Chanel, Lanvin, and YSL, but also J Crew.  She’s a true city girl, born and raised in Chicago, and lives there today with her hubby in a beautiful 4 story walk up.  You would all really be missing out if I didn’t take some pictures of her recent project – this room is adjacent to her kitchen and kind of a ‘hang out’ area to read, watch TV, or nosh on snacks and wine.  I’m OBSESSED with what she’s done, and can’t wait to see the rest of the first floor (to be continued, of course).

IMG_1133

A lot of the artwork is from Etsy, and many of the frames are from Ikea.  These thrifty finds are a nice balance with the custom grey couch, drapes and pillows.  Lucky for Alana, one of her besties is an interior designer here in the city, Wendy Labrum.

IMG_1134

This mirrored coffee table is delicious as well; full of fashion books and personality.

To read more about her and our interview with her, click here.  But for the rest of today, we’re going to focus on her closet.  Lucky for you!

IMG_1101

A sprinkling of Alana’s jewelry; some of her favorite go-to pieces.  David Yurman, Tory Burch and Hermes, oh my!

IMG_1109

Up close and personal with Alana’s shoe collection, shall we say.  Notice that this girl isn’t afraid to mix it up:  paisley, blue velvet, gold sparkle, leopard print, and a rose gold mirrored heel.  If this isn’t inspiration to branch out beyond your black patent leather pumps, what is???!!!

IMG_1107

What else isn’t Alana afraid of?  Sporting a fabulous printed pant.  What a pretty collection to walk into every morning!

IMG_1108

This, my friends, is Alana’s impressive collection of dresses.  With these beauties to choose from – labels ranging from DKNY to Theory to Milly to Tory Burch – she really can’t declare ‘I have nothing to wear!’  Well……yes she can.  We all have those moments, right?

IMG_1130

Isn’t this picture delicious?  I asked Miss A to pick three of her most favorite bags for me to photograph.  A hard thing for a self professed bag-snob to do, but here they are in no particular order.  A Chloe, a Burberry, and a Lanvin.  Which is your favorite?

IMG_1117Here is that shoe personality I was talking about.  5 amazing pairs of shoes I pulled out of her closet (and currently coveting all for me, I wish we wore the same size!):

L-R:  YSL cognac platforms, Christian Louboutin calfhair leopard wedges, Valentino sparkle low-heel mary janes, Tory Burch black boots & navy satin and velvet heels.

IMG_1104

Here just an assortment of sweaters and denim/slacks.  We’re loving the cargo skinnies – balance them out with the Tory Burch cream colored cardigan on the shelf above (the one with the black piping) and a pair of orange colored flats.  Cute, right?

IMG_1105Not one to colorize, but notice EVERYTHING is on black velvet hangers.  Taking good care of good clothes – well done!

After seeing Alana’s closet – wouldn’t you LOVE to get dressed in there every morning?

Notes to take from this superb shopper:

*don’t be afraid to mix it up!  Basics are a necessity, but just as much as statement pieces are.

*take care of your clothes.  use velvet hangers, fold things nicely, keep a clothing steamer handy (there’s one hiding in the background in one of these pictures) for last minute moments.

*shop designer sales!  you can really score some great pieces/shoes/handbags if you know what to look for and buy classics.

Thanks Alana SO MUCH for letting us share your closet with our readers.  I know they enjoyed a peek in there just as much as I enjoyed helping you organize!
