What to wear in Las Vegas

Bandage Dress

First of all – what NOT to wear.  A bandage dress. Everyone AND THEIR MOM was wearing a bandage dress this past weekend in Vegas.  I mean, it was epic.  Too many bandage dresses on too many people who should not be wearing bandage dresses.  While there are plenty of options out there if this is the look you want, the trend has definitely been overdone.  As in cooked, sauteed, and let’s move on to the next course.

On to what TO wear.  Here’s what in my ‘what to wear to Las Vegas’ playbook.

1.  saucy miniskirt

2.  one GREAT dress

3.  an amazing top

4.  a layering tank

5.  cropped blazer

6.  heels, pumps, sandals – FAB shoes!

7.  the right jewelry.  don’t skimp on what you bring.  it’s lightweight and doesn’t take up much room in your baggage.

8.  make up.  fun makeup you would never wear in your REAL life.

9.  a swimsuit that makes you feel GREAT!

Here are some great choices that are out there right now that fit the bill on my list:

And here are a few pics of our weekend away.  We had SUCH a great time.  If I can recommend anything – we played the game Cards Against Humanity while sitting around the pool both days.  BEST. GAME. EVER.  If, that is, you are a horrible person.  Which at some level, we all are.  ;-)  It’s a must buy.  I’ve never laughed so hard.

I love finding out what my girlfriends use, make-up wise.  Why?  Because the sheer amount we have to choose from to is overwhelming.  Though I love a good (kid-free) trip into Sephora to play around, I always end up consulting with a salesperson just to narrow down the choices.  Today I’m sharing what’s in MY make-up bag.  I don’t carry all of this around with me – most of it actually stays at home.  On a daily basis, I’m mostly a mascara, lip gloss and powdered foundation kind of girl.  Some days I don’t even get that far.  But when I really do it right……these are the products that are in play.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, $42

♥ Conscious Cleanse COMPLETE ♥

Mollie and Erin completed the Conscious Cleanse  and can’t tell you enough great things about it …..

But here is what we can tell you!  In honor of the 14 day cleanse, here are 14 things we thought you should know!

1. Jules and Jo are A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. – they were both not only knowledgable about their concept but real.  Being able to discuss not only the science behind the cleanse and their understanding of your love for chocolate – they have a balance that is appealing to everyone.

2. The recipes and food suggestions are a life changer. We are still making the soups, snacks and more … they are foods that we have incorporated into our daily lives. We love them, our husbands love them … and guess what, the kids love them. Enough said.

3. The support. It isn’t all fun and games to change things up for 14 days….but having the online support (through our Facebook cleanse group)  from people all over the world (yes, there were some people in other countries participating!) made it that much easier.  We were all going through the same thing but we did it together. When we (ok, Erin!) wanted those Hot Tamales, I posted it online and after the comments and support … they didn’t seem so appealing anymore!

4.  During the cleanse, in the book there is a chapter for each day.  So if you’re a rule follower, this is perfect.  There is a meal plan and daily suggestions to get through Day 1 through Day 14.

4. Feeling GREAT. Not good but great.  We both experienced so much energy and a natural ‘high’ that came from this cleanse.

5. The understanding of what our body likes and doesn’t like.  For Mollie, it became clear that her body isn’t a big fan of gluten.  That doesn’t mean for her that she’s suddenly going to go gluten-free, but for now she’s going to avoid it.  Not religiously, but it will be an experimentation in gluten-free foods.  For Erin, it was confirmed that dairy is a problem.  She has always suspected this but it is clear as day … Erin + Dairy = Not Good.  She didn’t eat a ton of dairy but will be making different choices now.

6.  It’s ok if you slip up.  14 days is a long time – and inevitably there are going to be times when you can’t miss a work dinner, or a get together for a friend’s birthday.  Jo & Jules made sure we all knew that if you ate something NOT on the cleanse, you forgive yourself, and move on.  Don’t look back, always look forward.

7.  There is support on the flipside.  Once the cleanse is over, Jo and Jules discuss ways to keep eating clean, change your way of life through food, and stay on the path!  Their book ‘the Conscious Cleanse’ is super handy for this, complete with recipes and advice.

8. It helped us ease off the sugar.  Both of us LOVE ourselves some candy and chocolate (see our post ‘A Sugar Situation’) and there is nothing like 14 days when it’s just not allowed.  It helped us see how much we don’t need it – and that it’s definitely more mental than physical.

9.  Mind over matter.  Jo & Jules cleanse program helped with the realization that we CAN do this.  We CAN change our eating habits for the better, it’s all about putting your mind to something and making the decision to change.  Not changing is certainly easier, yes, but are any of life’s big achievements?

10.  Favorite recipe: Mollie – hands down the Curried Carrot Soup.  Just made a fresh batch over the weekend!  Amazing that it’s SO creamy but without ANY cream.  Just veggies, curry, salt and pepper, and vegetable broth.  It’s a perfect fall-weather soup.

11.  Favorite Recipe: Erin - hands down the Joy Balls. To satisfy the sweet tooth this was a little bit heaven (or joy!) in a ball. A little bit of nuts, dates and almond butter and you have yourself a delicious snack.

12. Losing a Few Pounds. We both know that we lost a few pounds but our tummies were flatter and the jeans felt a little bit loose!

13. Sleep.  Call us crazy but we slept soundly during the cleanse.  Coincidence? We don’t think so.

14. New Beginnings. This is only the beginning for us.  We learned a lot, we asked a lot of questions and we are ready to take the cleanse with us.  Day by day, choice by choice.  The Conscious Cleanse was just the beginning.

Thank you Jules & Jo … for a life changing 14 days!

Wanna give it a try?? The next cleanse is Nov. 2nd and we hope you try it … you won’t be disappointed.

As Jo and Jules say …

Peace. Love. Health.

Conscious Cleanse, Day 4. A sugar situation.

Me, day 1 of the cleanse.

I am obsessed with sugar. I can’t believe that it has taken me my entire life until this week to realize that yes, I am a sugar addict.  I like  little sweetener in everything – my tea, coffee, my smoothies – and of course I NEED to have a treat every night after dinner.  Nothing crazy, but a little dark chocolate or a few malted milk balls will usually do the trick.  Erin and I (for those of you new readers to the Style Spies blog, we are long-time friends and co-founders of SS, and both doing the cleanse) can probably both cop to a sugar situation.  When we lived together in Chicago right after college, we had a ‘hot tamale situation.’  On a very fun trip to Hawaii together, we had a ‘junior mint situation.’  Erin, don’t pee in your pants laughing about the junior mint on the plane, because I’m smiling just typing about it.  And now my situations are probably these:  Gummi bears, malted milk balls, dark chocolate bars.

I think that ‘s the biggest ‘step’ for me in this conscious cleanse process.  Eliminating sugar (not completely, just during the cleanse) from a lot of my diet and being more aware (I wanted to use the word conscious but that felt a little cheesy, ha) of what goes in my mouth and therefore into my body.  As I type this, I would love some sweets, but is that just procrastination talking of not wanting to pay bills, clean up the office, or do any other of my many household duties?  Possibly?????

Enough about my sugar situation, let me tell you how the rest of the cleanse has gone for me:  GREAT.  I really, truly love it.  I feel less bloated (but a little headachey, thank you sugar), have great energy, and have slept well.  I am cooking healthier (as a result) for my kids, which makes me so happy and proud of myself.  Most of all though – I love the supportive emails from Jo and Jules, I love love love the Facebook group, and I am really loving these recipes!

First let’s start with the emails. Everyday I wake up to a motivating email from the girls.  It’s a great way to start the day – once i’ve read it, I feel good and on-track for the day.

Second, the Conscious Cleanse Facebook group.  I mean, this is the BEST idea ever.  I have done a couple of mini-cleanses on my own before, and they have gone ok.  But what I was lacking there was the SUPPORT!  And this FB group is exactly what I need.  To be able to post what I ate, if I liked it, see what others are doing, and feel a sense of community in what I’m doing is essential.  I didn’t know I was missing it before but after the cleanse is over I’m going to miss these fellow cleansers!!  To see other people’s successes and failures in this process is important – otherwise I think all of us would be thinking ‘Am I the only one DYING for a chocolate bar right now??’

Third, the recipes.  I was a little (ok, A LOT) wary of the recipes in the book.  I was sincerely worried I’d be eating tasteless chicken and unsalted green beans all day long.  Oh yeah, and gnawing on a carrot stick dipped in…..quinoa.  I know YOU want to know, what recipes have I tried and LOVED?

To start, my two breakfast favorites (so far) are the Hearty Love Smoothie & the Better-than-yogurt Chia pudding.  Today i topped my chia pudding with blueberries which was super tasty.  Here’s my first attempt at the Hearty Love Smoothie:

In the ‘dips and sauces’ section of your book, I have made both the Kalamata Olive Tapenade, and the Zucchini Hummus.  I have yet to pick up the chips recommended for dipping, so today i’m snacking on both of these with carrots.  They are delicious, full of flavor and make me happy to eat!

Onto ‘Veggie Dishes,‘ last night I made the Marinated Portobello Mushrooms.  I simply put them on a bed of chopped up romaine lettuce.  SUPER YUMMY.  And so filling I couldn’t finish them, so I had the rest for lunch today.  I failed to take a picture – I was so excited to eat this deliciousness I must have forgotten. But trust me, if you are a mushroom-fan, you will love this easy dish.

Also under ‘Veggie Dishes’, I made the Vegetable Medley Stir Fry a couple nights ago.  I didn’t have all of the ingredients recommended, so i subbed in a couple of items that conscious cleanse approved, and then served it with a mixture of brown rice and quinoa.  Filling and tasty.  But not as good as the mushrooms.  :-)

Finally, let me introduce you to what is currently saving my sugar cravings from getting totally out of control:  Protein Packed Almond Butter Balls (found in the ‘Snacks’ portion of recipes).  Seemingly sent from up above, I heart these.  The hard part?  Not eating them all at once.  Gahhhhh!

Tonight I might attempt to make the Joy Balls to snack on, as well as the Curried Carrot Soup everyone is talking about.  In the meantime I’m going to try *not* to think about how I really want a sweetened black iced tea from Starbucks right now.  Hmpf.

We will be participating in a 14 day cleanse that they will support us, educate us and watch our minds and body transform while giving us the tools to succeed during and after their program.

Bobbi Brown, the amazing woman behind Bobbi Brown cosmetics participated in The Conscious Cleanse – not only did she have a successful 14 days, she can’t say enough good things about their company.  “These girls are the real deal. Their passionate approach to health, wellness, and weight loss is inspiring. The Conscious Cleanse is a program I highly recommend to anyone who wants to both feel and look better.”

Jules & Jo, The Conscious Cleanse Duo

The program includes shopping lists, recipes, meal plans, phone calls, books and a community of other ‘cleansers’ to give us a new insight to our bodies and what we are putting in them …

Want to join us?? SIGN UP!

PLEASE feel free to take this journey with us … we want to do it with you!
