What to wear in Las Vegas

Bandage Dress

First of all – what NOT to wear.  A bandage dress. Everyone AND THEIR MOM was wearing a bandage dress this past weekend in Vegas.  I mean, it was epic.  Too many bandage dresses on too many people who should not be wearing bandage dresses.  While there are plenty of options out there if this is the look you want, the trend has definitely been overdone.  As in cooked, sauteed, and let’s move on to the next course.

On to what TO wear.  Here’s what in my ‘what to wear to Las Vegas’ playbook.

1.  saucy miniskirt

2.  one GREAT dress

3.  an amazing top

4.  a layering tank

5.  cropped blazer

6.  heels, pumps, sandals – FAB shoes!

7.  the right jewelry.  don’t skimp on what you bring.  it’s lightweight and doesn’t take up much room in your baggage.

8.  make up.  fun makeup you would never wear in your REAL life.

9.  a swimsuit that makes you feel GREAT!

Here are some great choices that are out there right now that fit the bill on my list:

And here are a few pics of our weekend away.  We had SUCH a great time.  If I can recommend anything – we played the game Cards Against Humanity while sitting around the pool both days.  BEST. GAME. EVER.  If, that is, you are a horrible person.  Which at some level, we all are.  ;-)  It’s a must buy.  I’ve never laughed so hard.

Shoe Lust: Vince

Out and about lately, I keep eyeing the same brand of shoes over and over again.  Vince.  Known for simplistic, high quality, and comfortable mens and womenswear, this brand is killing it in the footwear department this season.  I want each and every one of the shoes they made for spring!

My favorites:

Obsession: Ear Cuffs

I might be a little late to the game on this one, but I’m recently obsessed with ear cuffs.  I recently purchased my first pair from Shopbop, and as we’re headed to Las Vegas in a couple weeks you can be sure I’ll be rocking them there.  Some inspiration…..

Fashion Meets Function. At Disneyworld.

This post was super fun to whip up.  I was recently asked to enter a fashion wardrobe challenge by travel expert Kendra Thornton.   Travel expert you say?  Yes – Kendra has been traveling her whole life, and prior to starting her own PR business (Thornton PR), she was the Director of Corporate Communications at Orbitz.com.  Currently she makes television appearances in NY, LA, and of course her hometown Chicago talking about great travel deals and tips.

But back to the challenge.  First of all, what stylist/fashionista doesn’t like a fashion wardrobe challenge?  Exactly – we all love one. I knew I had to participate.  Here are the details of Kendra’s Disney trip:

My Vacation Wardrobe Challenge: Fashion Meets Function

In a few weeks, I will be going on a family trip to Orlando! Home of the world-famous Disneyworld. I will be spending my nights in Downtown Disney, a trendy little escape full of unique restaurants and quirky shops. I have decided to set up Kendra’s Fashion Challenge so that I can find the perfect outfit to wear on a night out. As a mother, I find function to be important. On the other hand, I want to look fashionable as well. I would love some help putting together the perfect outfit for a night in Downtown Disney!

The night out will include a trip to Rainforest Café. This is a fabulous little restaurant that allows you to dine in the middle of a tropical rainforest. Surrounding us will be giant butterflies, elephants, lizards and gorillas. In the middle of your meal, you just might catch a sudden rainstorm, complete with thunder and lightning. From what I have been told, this is realistic as you can get when you are looking for a rainforest-themed dinner. Rainforest Café serves American cuisine and even a few fusion-style dishes. I cannot wait to make memories with my family that will last a lifetime.

Orlando is an amazing travel destination, especially if you have a family with younger children. There is so much to do and see here – but you have to dress the part. Going out for a nice dinner and spending the day walking through an amusement park require very different outfits. Perhaps a conservative skirt or a nice pair of slacks is suitable for dinner.      Comfort is the key, but you also want to look fantastic. Choosing the perfect outfit will make my evening in Downtown Disney much more fun!

Though this challenge is only about Kendra’s nightime attire, I know that a lot of people wonder what they should wear all day at Disneyworld as well.  So – this is my Polyvore board for Kendra’s daytime look.  I know she’ll be on and off rides, in and out of theaters, so taking that into account, voila!  A hat and shades to protect from the sun, a big bag to hold all of her goodies (and kid stuff), a denim jacket just in case it’s chilly in the morning or even in those theaters, and of course some comfy yet chic sandals for walking around the park all day.

For night, Kendra will be out and about at Downtown Disney.  Having been there myself, it’s definitely a casual spot, but I believe that one should get a little dressed up at night.  Especially on vacation.  She won’t want to get too dressy since she’ll be dining with kids at the Rainforest Cafe, but she’ll want to have a nighttime edge for sure.  Key pieces here are this amazing dress by Young Fabulous and Broke (I want this for me!), these wedge peep toe booties by Ash, and you can’t bypass the fun gold statement necklace (which, by the way is only $30!).  Don’t forget the red lipstick to really complete the look.  Personally, this Jungle Red by Nars is amazing.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my Polyvore boards and gotten some inspiration for yourself – and I hope Kendra loves these looks for her trip!  If you’re interested in booking a trip like Kendra’s to this amazing travel destination, click through!  This is the exact site she used — it’s effortless to book everything.

If the shoe fits…

“The fact is, sometimes it’s really hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun.”
-Carrie Bradshaw

Last Friday, the adorable Sarah Jessica Parker came to Chicago. She’s just launched a shoe line and was doing a meet and greet at Nordstrom on Michigan Avenue. The deal was, if you bought a pair from her line you could meet her and have her sign them. I’m such a huuuge fan of hers, but honestly, spending $350 on a pair of heels just isn’t in the budget these days. So, I did what any normal girl would do… I tried them on and had a little fun playing dress-up.

Meet ‘Maude‘. This was hands down my favorite. I love that they’re metallic, and ladies- let me tell you- THEY WERE COMFORTABLE! The heel hight on these is just over 3 inches! That’s unheard of in a shoe this cute! Which made my decision to leave them at the store even harder.

This is ‘Carrie‘. It comes in a few different colors, but that day it only came in black in my size. And I’m pretty sure they were a little small… But I had to try, right?

So many gorgeous shoes! But by this time it was 4:15, and SJP was supposed to make her entrance on the 3rd floor in 15 minutes. So I bid adieu to Maude and Carrie in hopes of getting a glimpse of the real Carrie. I was not disappointed.

{swoon!}

Such a fun day. Truth be told, if I hadn’t juuuuust moved and spent all my money on couches, I probably wouldn’t have left empty handed. While $350+ isn’t inexpensive for shoes, they were comfortable, stylish, and very well made.

My go-to look

What do I throw on when I look into my closet and think:  I have nothing to wear!!!????

This.

A grey tee shirt.  {but not any old grey tee, a Rag & Bone grey tee}

My David Lerner leather front leggings.  {comfy & chic, a tough combination to achieve}

Red wedges. {at least 6 years old, by Tara Subkoff, try these}

A favorite pendant.  {Stella & Dot}

Why do I love this outfit so much?  Simple, polished, and comfortable!  The accessories add a little more personality, but the pants MAKE it, right?

Leopard + Lace

As a stylist, I’m always making clothing combinations for my clients that they tell me they NEVER would have thought of themselves (hence, leopard print plus lace).   I tell them – well it’s a good because otherwise I wouldn’t be doing my job!  This outfit started with this great Karen Zambos top that I loved so much, I got it in black, too.  I usually don’t do that (buy something in a couple of colors) but this top will never go out of style and I consistently get compliments on both colors.

The next piece was the denim – I am really into Mother Denim lately.  They have such a great fit and perfect washes.  These specifically are their boot cut denim, in a wash called ‘secrets in a small town.’  Don’t know about that name, but the wash is killer for spring and the fit is divine.

Next of course came the vest.  I love a vest – I have a few more in my closet (that incidentally I’m standing in) that I can’t wait to share with you.  But this one I randomly came across while shopping for a client in Banana Republic this Fall.  It was such a good buy – I had a 40% off coupon – and the muted leopard print is done just right.  The other thing about a faux fur vest that you have to be careful of is that it isn’t too plush or full.  Especially if you’re well-endowed (which I am), a big puffy vest can add weight.  So this one had just the right combination of furry and cozy, yet sleek.

For the rest of the outfit details, see the end of this post.

Freezing to Fabulous

I’m in a bit of a quandary.

It’s got to do with frigid temps and date night. The challenge I’m finding: How to look cute and not freeze. It’s tough! And I’m pretty sure I’m not alone here. Even my most fashionable friends have confessed to throwing in the towel and rocking a fleece top over their normally fab outfits. (No judgement!)

So with that in mind, I’ve decided to dedicate my daily online “window” shopping to finding cute and cozy date night solutions. And since the next date night for many of us will likely be Valentine’s Day, I decided to throw a little extra love into my choices.

1) Merino Silk-Panel Sweater $118

2) Cutout Floral Sweatshirt $75

3) Crepe Notch Front Jacket $110

4) Chevron Jacquard Pullover $79

5) Super Skinny Ankle Jean $150

6) Amour Tee $39.50

7) Crewneck Cashmere Sweater $298

Some great options in the bunch, but they really need the right accessories to take it from casual to glam. The right shoes and jewels can do just that. To easily elevate the look, I’d go for a pump with a manageable heel and fun detail. Here’s a couple of pairs I was seriously crushing on. . .

Rebecca Minkoff Kalin Pump $250

I meannnnnn, RM can do no wrong! The subtle tiger print on the top of these is super fun, and the fact that these beauties have less than a 3 inch heel is the cherry on top. Wear them with a skinny/slim jean cuffed a couple times and voila!

Outfit = made.

Mirror Metallic Pumps $179.99

I’ve been crushing harrrrrd on these since December, but couldn’t quite justify the $248 price tag. And now that they’re on sale, I had to share the love! What I like most about these was the classic silhouette that got turned on its ear by a mirrored metallic finish. So fresh. Style them the same as above. Or rock them with a distressed jean for a more unexpected feel.

(But what if it snows?!)

Dean Ankle Boot $169.99

50/50 Over the Knee Boot $598

Frye Wedge Boot $288

I’m not as excited about the boots. Probably because that’s what I’ve been living in for the last 4+ months. . . What I do like about these is that they’re a bit dressier than your average winter footwear, and just as cute. And because they’re so practical, you’ll definitely get your moneysworth.

Lastly, and most importantly, the accessories! They (like shoes) can change the entire vibe of an outfit.

Square Flower Necklace $48

Faceted Drop Earring $28

Rose Gold Clutch $189.99

Feather Trim Clutch $228

This was such a fun, fashion round up! I hope it gave you guys as much fashionspiration as it gave me. Looking forward to putting some fun, warmer outfit choices together for date night this weekend. Stay toasty!

Cuz I’m Just a Girl

Cuz I’m Just a Girl. This powerful little phrase has inspired, books, clothing, songs (thank you Gwen Stefani for having that catchy tune run through my head over and over!) and now the most sensual facebook page I have had the pleasure running into! It feels a bit like a breath of sexy air amongst all the over facebook group pages with its one of a kind posts of inspiring phrases, mystic scenarios, real and runway fashion.

The creators of this site (the fabulous Liossis sisters), started this page just wanting to celebrate all things girly. Everything from architecture to design to fashion and art. Anything and everything girly. The more they posted and people connected with them, the more clear it became why Cuz I’m Just a Girl was born. This is what the sisters had to say: “We realize that sometimes society makes women feel like embracing our femininity somehow makes us less strong. We couldn’t disagree more. Femininity is to be celebrated and a great part of our strength.”

I love finding out what my girlfriends use, make-up wise.  Why?  Because the sheer amount we have to choose from to is overwhelming.  Though I love a good (kid-free) trip into Sephora to play around, I always end up consulting with a salesperson just to narrow down the choices.  Today I’m sharing what’s in MY make-up bag.  I don’t carry all of this around with me – most of it actually stays at home.  On a daily basis, I’m mostly a mascara, lip gloss and powdered foundation kind of girl.  Some days I don’t even get that far.  But when I really do it right……these are the products that are in play.
